A fantastic house with a breathtaking view

Villa Malpe is a proper house now – not a construction site any longer. The garden is fenced in, the trees and grass have been planted, the paths have been paved and the house is complete – or pretty close to complete. A few more details remain, but should be done in a few weeks (early January 2018). It’s been a challenging year since the project was thoroughly delayed and the contractor was doing such a poor job that I chose to dismiss him in March. But I have been able to get the unfinished work – windows, floors, walls, stairs, electricity, bathrooms and more – completed through the efforts of Chandan. He has diligently followed our plans and managed to get skilled labourers to do what was envisaged. So hats off to Chandan!

We stayed in the house in October – May-Kristin stayed on until the end of November – and are satisfied with the state of building.  The furniture is in place, the kitchen is equipped, the air conditioners are installed and the art is on the walls. Obviously, there are quite a few bits and bobs missing, but we’ll get them on our next visit. Friends from Norway, Germany Mumbai and Delhi visited us during our stay. So we’re getting a feel of the place.

And it’s really fantastic. The architect has done a brilliant job with the design, the rooms are spacious, the view is breath taking and the location is perfect.

The only hair in the soup is the contractor, who is demanding more money…….

Almost there….

The last few weeks in India were strenuous. Chandan (our man on the ground) and I spent a lot of time trying to get the house completed. The contractor seemed to have abandoned the goal of completing the house within the time frame that had been specified and revised by him several times.
So we concentrated on the infrastructure – water, electricity and sewage . and the windows. The entire western facade of the house is made up of French windows and three weeks before our departure not a single window was started. So Chandan got extra carpenters on site to complement the contractor’s own 5 carpenters . All the French windows are made of teak and built on site – and exerting all the pressure I could – I managed to close the house.
Our daughter and her boy friend were staying on a week longer than us (until the 24th of April) so the contractor and his people, our extra workers and Chandan managed to complete 4 of the 12 rooms in habitable state and to have all the 9 French windows completed. In fact they actually lived in Villa Malpe for tha last week, moving in the day after we’d gone back to Norway. The kitchen was completed by another contractor. The house is now locked and secured.
So we’re almost there. A bit of painting and polishing remains, the stairs between the two floors needs to be completed and 4 of the 8 bathrooms have some tiling work left, All the landscaping outside is still on the to-do list.

No news is bad news

I am guilty! I haven’t updated this blog for ages despite being in India at Villa Malpe since January. So what’s going on?

Well, when we arrived here in early January the house was supposed to be ready (built) but it wasn’t. In fact I was dismayed at how much work remained. So I sat down with the contractor and his people and asked them to prepare a new progress plan. This is a requirement in our contract and is meant to regulate the time the contarctor needs to complete the construction.

So after the 3 broken deadlines of 26th May 2016, 28th August 2016 and 1st January 2017, a new target date of 15th February was set by the contractor (not by me) with a work breakdown schedule of all the remaining tasks. That date passed and a lot remained. So the contractor said he’d be done by 15th of March. Then the 29th of March.

In fact he increased the pace even though I told him that he won’t be paid. So in a final bid to fininsh as much work as possible before we leave, we’ve negotiated a deal to let them carry on until the 14th of March – 3 days before we return to Norway. The project needs a few finishing touches (like the tiles in 3 bathrooms) all outdoor work and a few details, but we should have a near complete house by our departure.

Our man on the ground, Chandan, has taken the responsibility of completing the remaining work in our absence. Chandan has worked for us for 8 years and moved south with his family to help me with the project. He’ll be living in the house in a separate flat once it’s completed.

Hege of Meyerdesign visits Villa Malpe

We were delighted to host Hege from Meyerdesign in Norway for over a week. She has designed patterns and colour palettes for textiles and the interior of Villa Malpe. We plan to use her design and suggestions  for all textiles – curtains, cushions, bedspreads, bed linen, towels and table linen.

After Hege had spent a couple of days getting a feel of Villa Malpe and the surroundings, we went to Bengaluru to meet two printers. Padmini from Tharangini Studios spesialises in block printing and has a workshop and shop on her family estate in serene surroundings in the heart of Bengaluru. Sateeshan has a few large digital textile printing machines that can pretty much print any digital pattern on almost any textile.

Two very different approaches – block printing vs. digital printing – left us in quandry. Both have their advantages, but whereas block printing is charming, earthy and natural, the digital print is precise and can be fine tuned in accordance with Hege’s design.

So in the end we chose to go with Sateeshan and his digital printing. The result will be there for all to see. We’re really looking forward to seeing the final products on our walls, beds, sofas, etc.

Peacocks, tigers and elephants

Our attempts to get the project back on track seem to be bearing fruit, though we have to wait and see whether the contractor can deliver as promised. The materials needed for the completion is arriving at an accelerated pace and the number of workers has been increased significantly. Mud blocks for the first floor ceilings, granite slabs for the bathrooms, sanitaryware and electrical equipment has been arriving daily.

So we are left with a lot of time while we wait. Every afternoon a huge flock (pack?? herd??) of peacocks and peafowls visit the rice field next to the house we are renting. Yesterday we counted 33 of them.

We were taken into the fenced forest in a minibus, which drove right up to the tigers and lions – an awesome sight.

Starting the new year on a positive note

Having arrived here a week into 2017, we were dismayed about the pace of work on the house. Since then the contractor has increased staffing and we are hoping to complete the project in a month or so. We’ll just have to wait and see……..

The building process is muchhhhhhh slower than promised by the contractor, but the work progresses step by step. The woodwork (windows, doors, cupboards, kitchen) hasn’t started yet, so I suspect the 1.1.2017 deadline might not be reached.

The building licence – finally

After having been through several rounds of red-tape to renew the building licence, we were glad to hear that the Gram Panchayat (village council) finally gave us the good news – we are now allowed to continue the building process.

The actual construction has been rather slow the last few months, both due to the monsoon and the lack of permission to carry on. But our contractor, Jayaraj, has promised to gear up the pace this week so that the house can be ready by the end of this year – key in door!!
